Maria Wächtler Grammar school

Sense for originality

The KZA team was commissioned by the Real Estate Management Department of the City of Essen to perform an energy efficiency modernisation of the entire 6000-square-metre school building. The school complex consisted of a clinker brick building erected around 1900 and three other reinforced concrete extension buildings from the 1950s and 1960s. Meeting the energy efficiency targets whilst preserving the character of the three disparate parts of the building within the modernisation budget was the task of the team of architects.
